A Brief History of Heresy
$3.81
This short and accessible book introduces readers to the problems of heresy, schism and dissidence over the last two millennia. The heresies under discussion range from Gnosticism, influential in the early Christian period, right through to modern sects. This book is considered to be a very good overview for the “common reader”, but the author's ecumenical theological perspective is evident; readers should recognize this perspective as they are encouraged by the author toward acceptance of what the World Council of Churches calls “unity in diversity”. A History of Christian Thought: From Its Judaic and Hellenistic Origins to Existentialism
$8.64
Paul Tillich is regarded as one of the 20th century's most influential theologians, standing at the boundary between liberalism and neo-orthodoxy, idealism and realism, Protestant and Roman Catholic Theology. This book contains information from lectures originally presented at Union Theological Seminary and the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, summarizing and critiquing the entire history of Christian thought (with special emphasis on German theologians). Tillich, born in Germany is considered to be a “Christian existentialist philosopher” who is best known for his “method of correlation”--an approach of exploring the symbols of Christian revelation as answers to the problems of human existence as raised by contemporary existential philosophical analysis. While this book is considered an “introduction”, it is not easy to understand, and is best suited to theology students who are interested in the history of Christian thought as seen from the perspective of a theologian who is outside the evangelical tradition. Reformation Thought
$5.13
Reformation Thought is an acclaimed and popular introductory guide for theology and history students seeking to understand the central ideas of the European reformations. Based on McGrath's considerable experience of teaching Reformation studies, this text requires no prior knowledge of Christian theology. The Reformation is first placed within the socio-religious- intellectual context of the Late Middle Ages and Humanism, and then developed through its key doctrines. The author discusses the reformed doctrines of justification by faith, predestination, the sacraments and the church. Special attention is paid to Luther's, Calvin's and Zwingli's own respective thoughts on each doctrine. The books closes with a lucid analysis of the impact of the Reformation upon History, with a special focus on the Protestant work ethic and the origins of capitalism. Learn More

The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud Debate God, Love, Sex, and the Meaning of Life
$4.25
Throughout the ages, many of the world's greatest thinkers have wrestled with the concept of -- and belief in -- God. It may seem unlikely that any new arguments or insights could be raised, but the twentieth century managed to produce two brilliant men with two diametrically opposed views about the question of God: Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis. They never had an actual meeting, but in The Question of God, their arguments are placed side by side for the very first time.
For more than twenty-five years, Armand Nicholi (associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School) has taught a course at Harvard that compares the philosophical arguments of both men. In The Question of God, Dr. Nicholi presents the writings and letters of Lewis and Freud, allowing them to "speak" for themselves on the subject of belief and disbelief. Both men considered the problem of pain and suffering, the nature of love and sex, and the ultimate meaning of life and death -- and each of them thought carefully about the alternatives to their positions.
At the core is Freud’s assertion that God is a figment of the imagination (more accurately, God is an outcome of our deep-seated need for protection, stemming from the helplessness of early childhood). Lewis, on the other hand, did not see the belief in a higher power as a childish need for comfort. In fact, he wrote, "rendering back one's will which we have so long claimed for our own, is, in itself, extremely painful. To surrender a self-will inflamed and swollen with years of usurpation is a kind of death." Nicholi never take sides, but instead gives both men a chance to eloquently answer the big questions of humanity: Why is there suffering? What should be our guiding belief? How do we form a moral compass? While some have accused the author of favoring Lewis' position, others have said that it only appears that way because Lewis' position is the stronger of the two. This book could serve as a springboard for fruitful discussions with those who are seeking Truth. Learn More

Warranted Christian Belief
$5.27

This is the third volume in Alvin Plantinga's trilogy on the notion of warrant, which he defines as that which distinguishes knowledge from true belief.  In this volume, Plantinga examines warrant's role in theistic belief, tackling the questions of whether it is rational, reasonable, justifiable, and warranted to accept Christian belief and whether there is something epistemically unacceptable in doing so.  Plantinga, a member of the Reformed Church, is considered one of the most important analytical philosophers of religion today, and certainly is one of the most important theistic philosophers.  Plantinga has devoted his scholarly life to answer the question of whether the Christian faith can be justified, and this book is the fruit of forty years of excellent work.
